AGE / COUNTRY OF ORIGIN:

Late 19th Century, United States of America

DETAILS/DESCRIPTION:

A magnificent antique Victorian gilt wood and gesso floor mirror featuring a dramatic arched form surmounted by an elaborately carved crest. The crest displays bold acanthus leaf scrolls, grape cluster motifs, and foliate details rising above the arched top. The frame is richly adorned throughout with beaded molding along the arch, applied grape cluster and vine leaf ornaments at the upper corners of the arch, and carved decorative cartouches at each lower corner featuring scrollwork and floral elements. The stiles are fluted with bead-and-reel accents and terminate in turned column-style bases with scroll feet. The back reveals a wood frame construction consistent with 19th century manufacture, with original hanging hardware. The mirror plate shows age-appropriate foxing. The gilded gesso finish shows honest wear including chipping and losses, particularly at the lower corners and base, and cracking at the upper arch near the crest attachment. A spectacular statement piece with remarkable sculptural presence.

STYLE:

Renaissance Revival

CONDITION REPORT:

Frame shows age-appropriate wear including gilt loss, chipping, and cracking to gesso particularly at the lower corners and base. Structural cracks visible in the arched upper frame near the crest junction. Mirror glass shows foxing and haziness consistent with age. Decorative crest elements show some losses and dark patina to the topmost section. Lower corner scroll ornaments show breaks and chips. Overall a sturdy antique example with age-related wear; restoration would enhance presentation.
